Completed January 2021

Location Christchurch

Scope & Scale

The construction of a new carriage wash servicing centre, including inspection pit, and refuelling, waste handling and potable water servicing zones and facilities, track works (including installation of internal rails and construction of external rail formation and tie-in to existing). The new facility included all building services, site works and drainage, security, fencing and site access. The automatic train wash system was installed by a separate contractor that required the necessary coordination of programme and access.

Performance

Construction resulted in a fit-for-purpose automated wash and service facility for KiwiRail passenger carriages. The continued maintenance and condition of KiwiRail premium carriages is such that high-value tourists are attracted.

Contaminated spoil was exposed during construction. This required careful dewatering management (including health and safety practices and environmental controls) to remove suspended solids and dispose of safely.

The site was also adjacent to live rail, so work was scheduled around train movements in coordination with KiwiRail’s Site Yard Operations and Mechanical Maintenance Operations. The track tie in required particularly close coordination.

HRS carried out carpentry and concrete work.

Programme: Extended due to COVID19 Alert level lockdowns and agreed Extension of Time.

Health & Safety: No lost time injuries and excellent reporting of near misses/potential incidents.  COVID19 Safety Protocols employed when work resumed following lift of Alert Level lockdowns.

Budget: Increased due to COVID19 Alert level lockdowns, and approved variations including a significant variation for the removal of contaminated spoil.
