Client Shirley-Richmond Methodist Parish, North Avon Baptist Church, North Avon Property Trust and Delta Trust

Completed January 2021

Location Christchurch

Scope & Scale

A new 1,700m2 community worship facility for combined Crossway Parishes.

While the project was a single resource and single building consent, construction was under two separate contracts with different principals for each stage (The entire site was redeveloped as one cohesive development, however the two buildings (North Avon Baptist/Delta Trust – Stage 1 and Crossway Church – Stage 2) remain on separate titles, under separate ownership with separate funding).

Delta Trust remained operational in their existing building whist stage 1 was constructed and relocated into the new building allowing stage 2 to progress. The two buildings adjoin each other, accessible by two-way fire doors.

Performance

For Stage 1 HRS delivered a single-storey community hub featuring two large function rooms (both with kitchens), toilet facilities, office and worship space.

Stage 2, also single storey consisted of toilets, offices, teaching spaces, kitchen and reception but features oversized internal ceilings in multi-purpose and worship spaces. The multi-purpose space has a sports floor fitted. These spaces can be divided by large operable walls spanning the width and height of the main auditorium.

Stage 2 features large structural steel cantilevered canopies which the complicated installation and interface required significant onsite collaboration between engineers, HRS site manager and the subcontractor.

Both stages incorporate interior made-to-order (Decortech) and exterior (Parklex and Swisspearl) cladding products which required early procurement as some supplies were ex Europe with very long lead times. A very high finish was demanded, and close quality control monitoring of the installation ensued as there was no margin for error as spares were limited.

HRS carpentry resource was used for traditional build and concrete works.
