Client Anglican Parish of East Christchurch

Completed April 2022

Location Christchurch

Scope & Scale

HRS were engaged to strengthen a church building that had suffered earthquake damage (structural cracks, cracks to arches, including the chancel arch, collapse of the porch gable.

The work was time-consuming and involved cutting out a layer of Oamaru stone at the top of the inner wall and replacing it with reinforced concrete. In other places, notable the chancel arch, the Oamaru stone was replaced over a greater area with reinforced concrete then plastered and cleverly painted to resemble Oamaru stone – the difference is only noticeable by close inspection.

Performance

The project was notable for the high level of cooperation between HRS, the client, the structural engineers, and the heritage architect which saw significant collaboration in the approach and methodology to ensure the heritage values were preserved and the structure remained safe during the works.

The bond beam construction, chancel arch strengthening, and porch reconstruction where technically demanding and required extensive and detailed planning.

HRS delivered an exceptional level of quality and performance and was awarded extra works to construct a new ancillary building attached to the church.

The church plays an important role in the community – HRS had a great sense of purpose and is proud in delivering such an outstanding result.  The project received multiple Master Builder awards.
