Hagley College Gymnasium

Date of Completion  January 2011 | Duration 8 months | Contract Value $2.34 million

Scope and Scale

HRS’s initial contract involved the construction of a new 600m2 gymnasium. During construction HRS were awarded an extra 1500m2 of earthquake strengthening and architectural upgrade of the existing A Block (2-storey, 12 classroom block), and construction of new 250m2  2-storey link section between the gymnasium and existing building.

The gym included the construction of purpose -made ‘gym floor’ and received a full ceiling throughout. Strengthening work involved a large amount of structural steel being bolted into the existing structure and making good surfaces.

HRS’s work proceeded during earthquake aftershocks.

Performance

HRS’s construction methodology was developed to manage work being carried out within a tight site, and within the operational campus.  HRS communicated daily with staff members to keep the college informed of activities and likely disruptions and scheduled work around school functions to reduce impact.  Safe on site practices where employed to ensure the safety of college staff and students, and more so when the college undertook site visits during construction.
